San Juan Mountain School is an alternative high school in Pagosa Springs, Colorado serving grades 9-12. We value character development, individualized education strategies, and flexibility in our instructional model.
We begin each school year with two weeks of school design. This time is spent teaching students how the school runs, developing technology and phone agreements with students, determining which character skills students find most important, and taking students on a two-night educational trip.
We run on a hexter-based model, meaning students switch to new classes every 6 weeks. We find this allows students to stay on top of their work and not fall behind and feel overwhelmed. Students take 5 new classes each term and receive a quarter credit for each of them. Our credit completion rates hover around 87% each year.
Mission
To build a flexible and creative community where our unique students feel supported to prepare for their futures.
Motto
